Motion designers can learn a lot from other movement based art forms. For this animation I studied a variety of styles of dance choreography before planning the sequences of movements performed by the shapes in this animation.
Every part of an animation should be intentional and work to advance the story being told, or create a clearer understanding of the idea being described.
In this animation there is a first encounter, a phase of exploration and finally a coming together of the two main shapes. The backgrounds are there simply to aide the development of the story.
I created the style frames below in adobe illustrator, taking inspiration from the compositional explorations of Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Joan Miró and Henri Matisse.
